What About Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Have you found yourself asking "whose clothes are these?"when you are taking care of your very own "little clothes" since losing weight with gastric bypass? Men and women alike, after experiencing massive weight loss, enjoy a wonderment, a shock and awe, as they see their new clothes which appear to be so small. Can this really fit me? we ask. Or sometimes we simply state, "Oh, this will never fit me." We still see ourselves as large and morbidly obese.

I was telling some friends about a dress I will be wearing to a party, "My dress is so sexy - I am looking at it thinking can I really wear that thing? (as images of the Little Fat Girl wedged into a sausage casing fill my demented head). The dress is knee-length navy blue knit, one shoulder and very fitted - think Marilyn Monroe! I'm wearing red strappy 4" sandals and a red beaded handbag! I'm dying here! Can this be ME?????" I was giddy with excitement.

It's been over five years since I've lost my weight, yet I still cannot believe this dress will fit me. In many ways I hope the excitement and thrill never fades. On the other hand wouldn't it be nice to accept myself as I am now and quit picturing the Little Fat Girl when I see myself?

My friend and our frequent contributor Kim, wrote to me, "It is funny how we can't imagine ourselves in our clothing. I had shrunk a white T-shirt (it was a dry flat number and I accidentally tossed it in the dryer). It came out looking like a shirt for a 9-year-old. I figured that I'd put it on and wear a blouse over the top...sort of wear it like a cami. Was I surprised when it was actually big on me. It just floors me and I know that it will be a long time for me to finally realize what size I actually am."

Another friend is the mother of a WLS patient. After hearing about my dress Maxine responded, "I look forward to seeing my daughter in your shoes! And when she goes out for a gala event and pasta alfredo is an entree and she chooses the palate cleanser because she knows how good she looks and feels and what it took for her to become who she is. So much too look forward to Kaye!"

Yes, Maxine. So much to look forward to!

  • What About Our Obese Kids?

My wife and I went to a birthday party recently for one of our grandaughters at a local skating rink. We were surrounded by about 50 kids, ages 7 through 10 plus parents and grandparents. They had a ball and so did we.

In the process of having a good time by all, I could not get my mind off a startling fact - the majority of the kids there, some adults too, were seriously overweight. It is just as we have been told by Media, over and over again. I thought, the Media message is apparently not getting across to most parents or, perhaps, they just don't know what to do about the problem.

We think we found a solution. You be the judge.

It's called - The PariPlan. It's hailed as the leading weight management solution provider for families with overweight children.

Arkansas State University Professor, Dr. James Farris, P.T., PH.D, said The PariPlan “is one of the best resources I have seen for parents to readily use and easily understand. I can't think of any concept, from the literature that is related to controlling childhood or adult obesity, that is not covered by The PariPlan.” It's a first-of-its-kind child weight management plan that gets kids into shape in a health way not through some fad diet.

The U.S. Government estimates there are currently 10-20 million overweight kids in the U.S. alone. The range of 10 - 20 million seems vague until you just look around at any gathering of children. You can see for yourself that Childhood Obesity is an epidemic. It's an undeniable fact of today's society. It means major health problems for kids when they become adults and major costs to our health care system unless parents take action with the right tools and information.

You might argue that obesity can be genetic. That's true enough. But, why add to the problem by not getting kids into a program that gives them a fighting chance? Every pound they keep off is one less pound that will negatively affect their future health and wellbeing. In fact, why not have parents participate too and make it a family project? Talk about bringing the family together!

According to my research, thousands of families have already been helped by The PariPlan. We need to let other parents and grandparents know about it which is why I posted this. If you know someone who can use this information, please pass it on! Let's spread the word. You can use the email icon at the bottom of this article to forward it via email.

The PariPlan consists of a book and companion CD and provides all the tools and inspiration a busy parent needs to get their child’s weight on track while building the child’s self-esteem. I think we all know the abuse overweight kids get from other kids. For many kids, this abuse carries into adulthood and can negatively impact their quality of life in so many ways.

I can proudly say that none of our grandkids are overweight or obese because their parents and we grandparents have taken the time to keep on top of their eating habits and physical conditioning. That was not the case for the developer of the PariPlan. It was developed by a mother who solved the problem in her own family first and then had her solution reviewed by her Pediatrician.

The PariPlan works because it’s not a diet. It’s roadmap for parents on how to make lasting changes that will help their child - for life. The PariPlan provides a step-by-step approach, complete with inspirational book, easy software tools, printable activity sheets and more.

We think it's worth a look. It could be the solution that you, or someone you love, needs to raise healthy and happy kids.

  • When Weight Loss Surgery Releases Other Addictions

What would it be like, to be able to control an obsession for chocolate? Take it up a notch and think about people seeking to control full-scale eating disorders, drug addiction, gambling, smoking, drinking...even compulsive shopping!
    FreshStart Online Weight Loss Hypnosis.
This program ensures you will stick to Any Diet. Amazing!
When "food becomes my comfort" and someone crushes the bathroom scales at morbidly obese levels, body image goals and eating disorders can easily morph into a full flowering of addictive compulsions. This person is psychologically armed and dangerous to themselves. The question is what can they do to regain control over these impulse disorders?

Filling an inner void typically involves the steady build-up of an obsessive compulsive drive. Self worth, body image and any number of ego-enhancing drives push a person into ritualized behavior, most of which aggravates rather than soothes the soul.

Weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery where up to 90% of the stomach is surgically tied off in order to limit food intake, would seem to be all about excess food and binge eating resulting in at-risk obesity. Yet, gastric bypass surgery is purely "mechanical" and doesn't deal with underlying neurological dependence issues.

However, deeper down in psychological space, other factors are at play, as new research into addictive behavior suggests. Thinking that their days of body image phobia and obesity are now over following weight loss surgery, perhaps 30% or more of men and women increasingly discover that something deeper remains, namely the drive towards any-and-all addictions.

What's next? Drug abuse, alcoholism, gambling, over-the-top consumerism and compulsive shopping behavior.

It's called Addiction Transfer - where Eating Disorder Morphs Into Another Obsession.

In the psychiatric theory spectrum with genetics (nature) on one end and behavior-reinforcement (nurture) on the other end, latest research news is that people with an "addictive" tendency keep it, re-dress it, but never entirely place it under wraps.
This could be the Best Weight Loss Program ever! Achieve Ideal Body Mass - Natural well being and weight control. Written by Medical Doctor.
Weight loss surgery produces profound body shaping and body image transformations, yet "window dress" your body and the mind continues to seek other avenues for obsessive compulsive focus. In the case of bariatric surgery getting thin only creates a "re-direct" of the baseline impulse-control disorder into new areas where new urges and craving take over. Think of it. A person loses 200 pounds of built-up weight, then turns to drinking two bottles of whiskey a day!

Remedies Research - Altering Brain Neurology.

Unlike shrimp and bovine cattle, humans possess nature's state-of-art brain. 4 million miles of nerve fibers and neurological horsepower to drive over 10 billion brain cells, each with as much as 25,000 synapse-connection to other cells. And so, what about gaining control over addictions, whether eating disorders like binge eating and anorexia, or gambling, or drug abuse?

    * Bio-Chemical Intervention.

Some research already reveals that certain classes of obsessive behavior, like binge eating disorders, associate with depressed levels of the regulating brain hormones serotonin and neuroepinephrine and dopamine. Increasing these hormones acts on the brain's neurological structure, effectively blocking certain receptor sites, altering bio-chemical messaging. Result? You get an immediate uptick in "feel good" sensations.

    * Drug Addiction - Blocking Receptor Sites.

When "addiction transfer" takes a person from body image obsessions to drug abuse, there's a risk of falling into equally life threatening addiction as with opiates. Fortunately, these addictions are being attacked using new neural receptor-blocking drugs such as suboxane. How does it work? The neural pathways associated with 'drug craving and pleasure' are traced by suboxone, which occupies these neural receptor sites, thus silencing the addictive craving, and bio-chemically road-blocking the site so that heroin cannot enter, thus renders it useless.
    Treating Underlying Anxiety And Depression.

Other mood altering drug classes are known as benzodiazepines, and are offered under brands including Xanax or Valium. For 70% of the population, these powerful drug mediators work to slow the drive towards addiction relief.

  • Creating Tiny Gardens of Weight Loss and Inner Gain

About a month ago, I decided to diet. I had tried a few crazy diet programs before, but never stuck with them, some not even for two days. I remember the only time I did successfully diet, was a diet that I made for myself. I truly believe it's the ONLY way one can diet. It must be a diet you create for yourself, one you know you can stick too. Yes, you must cut down on fat and calories, but if you surround yourself with low fat food and low calories foods of YOUR choice, you can definitely succeed.

Okay, so the other side of cutting down on food intake is to exercise. Let's face it; if you had the energy to do that, you wouldn't need to diet in the first place! I am a firm believer in vitamins, supplements and homeopathy. So the first thing I did was visit Vitacost.com and locate medications that suited MY diet plan and ME.

It took only a few days for my pills and green tea to arrive and I started taking them immediately. I ate less, felt better (no more acid reflux) and had the urge to just go do something. Even though I have a little exercise routine that I found online, I really feel that I need to DO something. Something that requires energy and makes sweat AND allows me to Accomplish something. Nothing compares to the euphoria feeling of exercising and accomplishing something when you are on a diet.

I know it's hot this time of year, but you can always go outside early morning or late evening and there's bound to be shade somewhere. Or make a sensible expenditure of a big 'ol umbrella and make your own shade. I've got many little projects to work on outside, but my favorite is working on my little garden. I plan on making many more and even smaller. Not only do I feel the wonderful sensation of accomplishment, but gardening is also therapeutic.

Okay for those of you who can't grow a thing..... I didn't say you had to plant one single thing! Your goal is to move around and create; i.e., exercise and accomplish, resulting in euphoria. Then sit back under a shade and sip on tea or water and reflect, enjoy, meditate, and relax. The whole purpose of this, is when you feel Good, you'll want to keep feeling that way. It will become a habit for you; at least it has for me.

So what kind of garden can you make? There are a MILLION ideas. Of course, you could make a rock garden, herb garden, glass bottle garden, and so much more. But I have a few little ideas, which are neat and fun.

Have you ever heard of Fairy Houses? Just do a google search and browse all the websites. You can even find several ideas on how to build your own. If you have a child or grandchild, this can be a project for the both of you. Not only are you accomplishing your goal (of exercising and accomplishing), but also you'll be spending quality time with someone who loves you. If you don't feel like searching, let me just say, you build fairy houses with whatever you find lying around (don't pull or cut anything that's living; fairies don't like that!). Fallen bark off an old tree, twigs, rocks, shells, and birdseeds make a wonderful start to a happy little home.

How about a shadow garden? This is a garden best made at the base of a tree with items that are weather tolerable. First you'll need to clean the ground at the base of your tree, removing all sticks, unwanted rocks, and other debris. Then decide on your items. You can buy tons of little garden decors at your local dollar store, but it's a lot more fun to make your own. Use your imagination.

Have some red and black paint? Locate some oval or round rocks. Paint them red and then put black spots, black head and black antennae for an adorable little Ladybug (spray with clear coat or high gloss enamel). A real cute idea it to select three rocks; two large and one small for a Ladybug family. Set these at the base of you tree. You can make them little homes from rocks of various sizes. You can place a terracotta pot plant next to them. At the base of it paint a little door and windows, making it appear as the families home.

Take tiny pebbles and incircle the families area, or then entire tree base. Again, use your imagination. (By the way, I create the little bugs mentioned here, but I began by carving the rock, giving is a slight beautiful 3D effect, which also is wonderful stress relief for your fingers. I'll have them available at my store soon (by the time you read this, they might already be listed!)

Another great garden idea is to Plant Yourself! This takes a little more physical labor than the above two, but it is well worth it. You need rocks of all sizes, and one large enough for you caboose. You want to arrange the rocks in a design that is appealing to you. I used a circle; resembling an Indian spirit circle or medicine wheel. I placed a large rock in the middle that can be used to stand on or to sit on. I placed four other rocks inside of the circle to represent to four directions. I placed a very large rock next to the circle; for me to sit on. I created a fairy house next to the circle, and built a large garden on the other side of the circle, so I can sit on my large rock and see the circle, the fairy house and the garden. I create and change this all of the time. So I have a place to plant my butt and just relax and reflect. I feel so wonderful because I exercised in the process, but because I was enjoying myself, I did not notice it.

I hope I have inspired you to create something. Work a little on your creation every other day, or whenever you can grab the time. You will be accomplishing so much for yourself by doing this. You will notice how better you feel in Mind, Spirit and Body. Enjoy your creations and use them as places of relaxation, mediation, prayer, and whatever else you can think of - that You Would enjoy. The reason you started to diet, was to feel better right? Obtain that goal by doing more than just dieting and exercising. You will find that creating little gardens of joy easily fits in with your self-made diet program wonderfully. Enjoy!

    I know I do.
    Tina.
